When Wey unveiled the V8X, a five-seat version of its flagship V9X SUV, it wasn't just launching another vehicle. It was running a real-world A/B test. Same platform, same wheelbase, same tech stack—only the seating changed. One version has six seats, the other has five. The rest is a study in how product teams split audiences and measure what matters.

For anyone in the A/B testing game, the V8X is a useful case study. It shows how you can take a proven base, change a single variable, and then watch the numbers roll in. You don't need a lab for that. You just need a market that votes with its wallet.

One Platform, Two Hypotheses

The V9X was built for families who regularly fill all six seats. The V8X targets those who rarely do. The hypothesis is simple: a large SUV with five seats and a huge trunk serves a different need than a six-seater with cramped third-row access.

Same wheelbase, same length within 80mm. But the interior volume shifts. The V8X's cargo area jumps to 864 liters, enough for 12 carry-on suitcases. Fold the rear seats and you get 2,225 liters. That's not a minor tweak. It's a structural change in the value proposition.

This is classic A/B thinking: don't change everything, change the one thing that matters to a specific segment. Then measure response.

Pricing as a Variable

The V8X comes in five trims, each with a different price point. The base sporty Max starts at 239,800 yuan, while the loaded family Ultra+ hits 315,800 yuan. The differences aren't just about seats. They reflect battery size, charging speed, and suspension tech.

But here's the twist: the family Ultra trim can add rear-wheel steering for an extra 5,000 yuan during launch, a feature worth 8,000 yuan later. That's a pricing experiment. Wey is testing whether customers will pay for a high-value option when the delta is small. The early order numbers will tell them if the price elasticity holds.

Feature Prioritization: What to Keep, What to Cut

In A/B testing, you decide what stays constant and what varies. Wey kept the air suspension, the dual-VLA intelligence, and the 800V platform on the top trims. They cut nothing from the luxury family package. But they did strip some features from the sporty versions—no air suspension on the base sport, for instance.

That's a deliberate split. The sport models use EDC dampers instead of dual-chamber air springs. The family models get the full suspension suite. By offering two different configurations, Wey can see which set of features drives more conversions in each segment.

Tech as a Conversion Booster

The V8X also tests how much advanced tech matters in a purchase decision. The car has a Thor-U chip with 700 TOPS of compute, a lidar, and 27 sensors. It supports end-to-end NOA from parking garage to destination. That's a lot of tech for a family SUV.

Wey is bundling lifetime free NOA service, a value of 32,000 yuan, as a launch incentive. That's another A/B test: does free software push people over the edge? The data will show if the offer lifts close rates compared to a lower price without the service.

Noise Cancellation as a Differentiator

One unexpected highlight is the acoustic engineering. The V8X uses nine acoustic glass layers, triple-sealed doors, and 104 aerodynamic optimizations. It also features ENC engine noise cancellation and RNC road noise cancellation. These are rare in this segment.

For families, a quiet cabin is a big deal. Kids sleep, conversations don't need shouting. Wey is betting that this feature will resonate more than a third row ever would. That's a hypothesis worth testing.

The Takeaway for Testers

The V8X isn't just a car. It's a controlled experiment. By keeping the platform constant and varying the seating, pricing, and feature sets, Wey can isolate what drives demand. The same logic applies to any product: change one variable, measure the outcome, iterate.
